What do you think about this sonnet i wrote for english class ?

When a radiant sun sets over a glistening lavender bay,

Or a tiny baby robin takes its first flight during a magical spring hour,

What words come to mind, what grander message can one possibly convey?

For beauty is by far the most wondrous pleasure this world has to offer.

It takes its presence in every object and every being on this land,

From the most marvelous and kingly palaces to a delicate blossoming yellow daisy.

Beauty has no definite shape nor figure, as I have come to understand,

It all depends on how pure one’s mind and how deep his soul can see.

Thus, the brilliance of such beauty is without a doubt unrivaled in extent,

For how can one possibly compare the magnificence of a priceless Greek statue,

To the breath-taking elegance of a simple red rose left in its element.

For beauty should never be measured as many wrongfully do.

The uniqueness of said beauty has limitless achieve,

So open your eyes and acknowledge what others have failed to perceive.

What do you think about this sonnet i wrote for english class ?
Honestly, it sounds a bit choppy.
Reply:A good effort. You have a gift keep at it.
Reply:It's gorgeous.
Reply:Nature has touched you and that comes through in your poem. Indeed there is a depth to the soul from which beauty and wisdom spring. I found a contradiction, however. You say that beauty can't be compared and yet a statue can't be compared with rose, you are comparing. Keep up the effort.
Reply:Well done.
Reply:I like it a lot!

I need the set up for the vest of a daisy member of the girl scouts?

The link posted above is great, except it hasn't been updated in a few years so there are more items for the Daisy level that aren't listed.

Daisies now have troop numerals (white numbers on a yellow background) and all levels can wear the American Flag emblem.

The flag goes on the right shoulder (the girl's right shoulder, it's on the left when you look at the tunic), near the top where the seam to the back is.

A little below that, or about even with the World Association Pin or top of the insignia tab if worn, you place the troop numerals.

The packages the items come in have instructions for both how to put them on and a picture of where it goes. Hint: make sure you follow their directions *exactly* for ironing them on. If you try to cut corners, they don't stay as well. Also, if you're pressing the tunic to get out wrinkles, be careful not to iron over the "Daisy Girl Scouts" lettering near the bottom of the tunic, they can't take the heat designed for ironing the tunic.

The petals can be placed on in any order desired, they don't have to stay in the order they are shown. Many troops earn them out of order, anyhow. Just when you're spacing them remember you need to get 10 around - the easiest is probably to have one at the top, one at the bottom, and four petals on each side between them.

Besides the items shown on the GSUSA site or the troop numbers and flag, any other patches, pins, etc. are worn on the *back* of the tunic in whatever position you wish. They're usually given for fun events, and aren't considered official emblems or earned insignia, which is why they go on the back. That even includes patch programs that are actually earned through certain activities - they still go on the back.

I am starting my flowers n starter pots from seeds how many seeds should go n ea. pot they are like 2" by 2"

they are wildflower seeds like shasta daisy coreopsis, coneflowers, and sweet williams catch fly. should they even be started in starter pots?

I am starting my flowers n starter pots from seeds how many seeds should go n ea. pot they are like 2" by 2"
I always put 2-3 seeds per pot to start them (just in case they don't all germinate), and once they sprout and look nice and healthy (1-2 inches tall) I just take a pair of scissors and snip the extra ones, leaving the most healthy one to continue growing. I don't pull the extra ones out, because that may disturb the roots of the one I want to keep. Just a little snip.

Those kinds of seeds don't need to be started indoors, but can be if you want to plant them outside as plants. They are easier to control placement that way...good luck!
Reply:wildflowers dont need started in starter pots. they are really easy to take care of and will come up on their own fairly quickly if you plant them outdoors once it warms up and there is no threat of frost outside
Reply:Depends on where you are at...I would do 1 seed/plant to a starter pot in order to make it easier to plant later. All of these seeds do wonderful just scattered into your garden area with out "starting" them.

How long does it take a two year old pug to get use to a new puppy pug brought into the house?

My two year old pug, Peach, has always been the only one for two years. Now today I just brought home a new pug puppy, Daisy, and Peach who is always so sweet and loving is now snapping and barking at the new puppy when it comes near her. Will this last forever or is it something they both have to get use too? I really love both of them and I want things with them to get better :-(

How long does it take a two year old pug to get use to a new puppy pug brought into the house?
First of all, YEAH FOR PUGS! (I have a 2 1/2 year old %26amp; a 10-month old).

Take care of the problem now. Before I got my 2nd pug I had a boston terrier and my pug and her would go at it (blood all over). They would bite each other so hard and even with me pulling them apart would keep their teeth clenched down.

When I bought the 2nd pug (I took the terrier to a rescue group) they instantly bonded. I heard it's hard to have same sex dogs. But go to training class and scold Peach for growling or punking the new pup. When she scowls throw her on her back and let the puppy walk around her. One thing that will make it easier if you decide to go to a trainer is to write down every time Peach growls at the new pup. Is it when they are eating? Or when Daisy tries to play with a toy? Or maybe when Daisy tries to touch Peach?
Reply:Pugs can be notorious for not wanting to share a home with any other dog. Make sure she still gets her "respect" as the older and first dog! I'd spend some real quality time down on the floor interacting with both and supervising their activities.

Now it is not unusual for a adult female to take over the role of "mother" to a pup. They set the house rules and can help housetrain the pup by example. I've fostered many moms/litters and moms can be intense with pups at times, nipping or snapping at--but not really biting down. They are teaching respect. Give it time and be patient with both. The pup wants to play and Peach is just not sure at this point.

My Peach is my top pack dog for me--keeps everyone in line and teaches the young dogs for me. I fostered pups a lot for years for the rescue. It normally works itself out.

Any ideas for a birthday cake for my daughters 1st birthday next week?

I'd love to make her cake, something a little more than an iced sponge cake would be good, but I have no idea where to start!!

Although I am reasonably proficient in the kitchen, I am by no means an experienced cake decorator. Does anyone have any good ideas (with instructions please!) for a simple but effective cake? I was wondering about perhaps the hedgehog cake that was so impressive when we were younger... or a duck, or a ladybird would go down well with my daughter. Or a flower, seeing as her name is Daisy!

Pennies are limited at the moment, so buying fancy cake tins is out.

Many thanks for your ideas!

Any ideas for a birthday cake for my daughters 1st birthday next week?
If you look in local directory you will find cake makers/decorators.Most will rent out cake tins so you could rent a teddy-shaped tin etc.
Reply:goto a cheap supermarket and buy a cheap one and then put extra tacky pinkicing on it to look like you made it. I did that for my daughters 1st.....or...better still....do what my sister does an get her nan to make one instead.
Reply:I would check on www.kraftfoods.com and use Kids Cake on the search. They have some really cute ideas for birthday cakes that are really simple and easy to make.
Reply:it's my sons 1st birthday on friday and i ordered a spongebob cake as he likes spongebob!i think a flower cake would be nice as you say her names Daisy.

good-luck and wish your daughter a early happy birthday!
Reply:make cupcakes and ice them with pink frosting. on the cupcakes, make a cute daisy flower with yellow and white frosting.
Reply:how about a simple lemon drizzle or something, you can make the decorations easily and it only has to be drizzled (hence the name of the cake)!
Reply:At craft stores or Walmart (craft section of coarse!) You can get the top half of a barbie doll.Make a round cake, like with a bundt pan. Once the cake is done and cooled, put the doll in the middle. You can use iceing and sprinkles to make her dress (Which is the cake). It's very cute! My aunt did this for her daughter's 1st!!!

You can also find great ideas at bettycrocker.com
Reply:Just a idea if you have a tesco's near you they make birthday cakes for you. All you do is take in a picture and it gets done for you, but have a look first at what they do and i dont think it was that expensive...... Just a idea
Reply:my girls love strawberries and the color pink. can't go wrong with a box cake if you are new to baking. get a strawberry cake mix and you can either get a white frosting and decorate with sprinkles(always a hit) or colored sugar, or even some cut up strawberries, or you can go pink on pink(pink frosting) and do your own combination decorations. just remember it's her 1st so any cake you put in front of her will make her just as happy and isn't that what counts?, believe me,the amount of money you spend does not.
Reply:Congrats FiFi :)

Try looking at these cakes...I'm sure you could improvise some, but they have great ideas...

You must look at this site first...I think you will find everything you need to make her the bestest first bday cake ever :) They also have such fun games and invitation ideas to make it a total theme...and it's all do-it-yourself things......kudos especially to M%26amp;M's for this site....(try looking at the kraft foods site too...they have nice ideas as well)

Reply:what is really good is a neopolitan layerd cake. First you cook a chocolate cake. let it cool and then put a vanilla cake in. while the vanilla cake is cooking you put anykind of icing that you like. take out the vanilla cake and put a strawberry cake in. while that one is cooking you put your favorite icing ontop of the vanilla and carefully put the vanilla cake ontop of the chocolate and put your favorite icing on that one. then you take out the strawberry cake and you can make a design but what is really good is putting vanilla icing and sprinkling strawberrys and chocolate chips ontop!
Reply:This is a great cake for a little girl. It is a daisy cake and it has a simple recipe and no special cake pan required. Here is the link...I think it would be perfect and it will impress your guests too!!!
Reply:Yay hedgehog!! I still remember the one my mum made me when I was small. Keep it simple and don't stress over it.

Hedgehog is probably easiest, is cheap %26amp; so cute. And really at 1 it's more for you %26amp; rest of family than the little one - she'll like the wrapping paper best!

Don't forget to take a photo.
Reply:For my children's get togethers I always go to www.nickjr.com

They have pretty good recipes and decorating ideas.
Reply:I think this rubber duckies in a bathbub cake is adorable! The bathtub is the cake. Blue jello makes the water. The directions look pretty easy, too.

http://jas.familyfun.go.com/recipefinder...
Reply:How about you make cupcakes instead or there are places now that make cupcakes and place them side by side to form a shape of cake before icing. Then when they ice them , they do so in a way that it looks like a cake but it's not, it's really the cupcakes.
Reply:Fifi - can you cut out a paper pattern for the Daisy petals - take a round cake for the center and put the petals you cut out of another cake around it? You could frost/ice the center with yellow done with food coloring and the petals with white. I think it would be beautiful!!!

How about one of these for Daisy - one of our home cooking TV cooks here in the USA made it:

Sunshine Cake

Recipe courtesy Paula Deen

6 eggs, room temperature

1/2 cup cold water

2 cups sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract, or both

1 1/2 cups cake flour, sifted

1/2 teaspoon salt, plus pinch

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar

Orange Butter Cream Frosting, recipe follows

Orange peel or zest, for garnish, optional

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

Separate eggs carefully, putting whites in a large mixing bowl and yolks in another large mixing bowl. Beat egg yolks until light and foamy. Slowly add the water. Gradually beat in the sugar, then vanilla and/or almond extract; beat until pale and thick in texture (total beating time can be as long as 7 minutes). Sift flour again with salt and baking powder. Return to sifter and fold flour mixture into egg yolk mixture, sifting in a little at a time.

Beat egg whites gently until foamy. Add a pinch of salt and the cream of tartar. Increase the mixer speed and beat until they form moist, glossy peaks.

Pour the egg yolk mixture in thin stream over the entire surface of the egg white mixture, gently cutting and folding with rubber spatula, making sure everything is completely folded. Pour into an ungreased 10-inch round tube pan with a removable bottom. Draw a thin spatula gently through the batter to get rid of any large air pockets.

Bake on the second rack from the bottom of the oven for 1 hour. (The cake tends to fall a small amount after 50 minutes, so do not worry.)

Invert pan onto a rack and let cool out of the pan for 1 1/2 hours. Frost when cake is completely cooled. If desired, garnish cake with orange peel or zest.

Orange Butter Cream Frosting:

2 sticks butter

2 1/2 cups powdered sugar

Orange juice

Combine butter and sugar in a medium bowl. Add just enough orange juice to thin the frosting to a spreading consistency.
Reply:This may not work for her first birthday and if you're on a budget at the moment, but it's a good idea to keep in mind for future birthday ideas. When I was a little girl, my mom was famous for her cakes and she would make us a cake that showed whatever we were really into at the time....My Little Pony, Donald Duck (when I turned 2), Mickey Mouse, whatever. But she also made us little girls. They sell cake pans that are shaped like up-side down bells and all you do is make the cake itself in that shape and buy these little half Barbie things. Picture a Barbie body with a large tootpick instead of legs (she's cut off at the waist). You can use your daughter's Barbie clothes (or buy cheap ones) to cover her top, then decorate the cake however you want. You make her look like a princess, or a bride, or just like she's wearing a pretty dress. I've even seen one that looked like a mermaid sitting on a rock. You'll need to buy cake decorator tips and either buy, or learn to make, the stiffer icing needed for that kind of project.

Go to your local arts %26amp; crafts store to find all of the supplies and most often, the pan comes with decorating ideas. I made a bride for my best friend a few years ago for her engagement party and it was a big hit.

Good luck and Happy Birthday, Daisy!
Reply:you can make a bunt cake and its easy and fun to decorate you can even stick a barbi in the top middle part you might have to take of its legs though thats what my mom did for my cousin
Reply:Make loads of rice crispy buns. Use what ever recipe you have.

Make a conical out of thick paper.

Using glaced icing, icing sugar and water spread on bottom of bun cases and starting at the bottom of the conical layer the buns until you reach the top.

Decorate which party poppers, popped away from child, and drape over buns.

Did this for my daughter's first and it had many compliments as it looked wonderful but was actually very easy to make and totally stress free.
Reply:I got exactly what you need easy fast and cheap all in one

you could bake cup cake or a cake

theres some recipe here at the Michaels (The Arts %26amp; Craft store) website:

I picked out myself some recipe I taught you might like:

(especially made for a 1st year old b-day)http://www.michaels.com/art/online/proje...

(easy n looks fancy and nice)http://www.michaels.com/art/online/proje...

you could also search for cake or cupcake and maybe you like something else the website is: http://www.michaels.com/

and theres also some classes you could learn more about it by asking on your local michaels or you could ask someone taking the classes to help you and like that they are able to practice or take the classes for a few days to learn the basics

How bad will these types of flowers spread?

I bought a bag of Butterfly %26amp; Hummingbird Attracting flower seeds. What I would like someone to tell me is if these are the types of flowers that will spread all over my (and my neighboors') yard. Here's the seeds:

Baby's Breath

Zinnia

Chinese Forget Me Not

Bachelor Button

Cosmos Sensation

Candytuft

Shasta Daisy

Black-Eyed Susat

Alyssum

Scarlet Sage

Foxglove

Also, are these flowers ones that will come back year after year?

How bad will these types of flowers spread?
Cosmos are self re seeding and will spread , Black eyed susan will spread. What zone are you in? This will determine if they are considered hardy in your zone. Tender perennials are plants that in Southern zones are usually hardy, but in more temperate climates will only be annual. Foxglove, Forget me nots, and Baby's Breath(Gypsophilia) are generally perennials in all zones. You will have Cosmos re seeding every year, but not the same plants coming back.Black Eyed Susan can become a nuisance, seeding itself every where, becoming invasive.
Reply:Bachelor buttons spread to a degree, but they're not that invasive. The others are all fine. The zinna, cosos, candytuft, alyssum will last one year. The foxglove, bachelor button, daisy and black eyed susan should come back. I'm not sure about the scarlet sage or chinese forget-me-not, I don't recognize their names as flowers that I have seen or planted.I think your butterfly garden is pretty safe not to get out of control.
Reply:The foxgloves are biennials - they make a plant the first year amn may not flower until the next. then they will seed and new plants will appear in surprising places, but they are easy to pull out if you don't want them. Cant tell you awhat the others will do as it could depend on where you live.
Reply:some will depend on your Zone and how good your ground is. My last place I culdnt get Cosmos to grow, here it self seeds all over the place Forget me nots will also take over by slef seeding if its happy and Black eyed Susan is a perennial that spreads both by self seeding and by spreading by runners. Never grew Baby's Breath...Zinna like to self seed, as do bachelors buttons and daisys Foxgloves have to really like their soil to ..
Reply:Naa, won't spread. Not absolutely positive, but they all sound like annuals - - this year only unless you save seeds for next year. They will create seeds. If have concerns, pluck off the dead flowers %26amp; dispose of them or save seeds for next year. If saving seeds, make sure they are thoroughly dried out, zip lock bag %26amp; label with marker what is in it %26amp; what color.

The best thing I ever did was buy a perennial book for plants, trees, flowers that return each year. Then periodically I add annual seeds of different flowers in front %26amp; around my permanent plantings. I marked each item in that book for my zone. I can not pick %26amp; choose for sun/shade, height, color and when %26amp; how long they bloom. I also created my yard on a graph paper with each square as a foot. This helped over the years for fencing, plantings, fountain, etc... Each perennial I marked a number on my 'blueprint' and the explanation of its name, etc.. on the back for future use.

Lot of work, but it reduces remeasuring over the years and moving some plants again and again.

I got myself on a catalog mailing list through Gurney's, Burbee's, etc... which allowwed additional options other than what is being sold in my city only. Prices was cheaper, too.

Why do my Gerber daisies wilt?

I have Gerber daisies in a pot. The instructuins say they like sun. If I put them outside, they wilt. Is there a temperature they don't like? It doesn't state on the instructions. I had to bring them inside. I put them out in the sun for just 1/2 hour this morning to test them and sure enough they wilted again. It is only about 80 degrees right now.

Why do my Gerber daisies wilt?
No they should not be wilting . I mean I live in florida and there is 100 degree weather here and mine are out in the sun in a pot and they do really well . I think maybe you have a weak plant go get another one and see . good luck .
Reply:These flowers do like the sun but the high temperatures/heat can dry them out very quickly...especially if you have them in a terra cotta pot...water evaporates from a terra cotta pot very quickly. You may have to water them twice a day when it is very hot. Start out watering them in the morning and then again in the evening. If you live somewhere extremely hot and they are in the direct sun all day, you might have to water them mid-day too. Keep checking the soil to make sure it is moist.

How do i get comfortable with riding my horse?

ok, my horse, Daisy is a frisky, stubborn brat, but i love her. her gate is walk, trot and prance. she is used to being ridden western which is what my granma who bought her rides. i learned english. when i ride her english with the english saddle she lowers her head like she is going to buck, she does that with my grandma too. when she rides her western, with the western saddle, she is way better. should i lear to ride western which i don't like as much, or should i fix this problem, and if so, how do i do that?

How do i get comfortable with riding my horse?
It might be what bit you are using with english. She is prob. used to something with a curb chain. Perhaps use a kimberwick when you ride her english.

Another possiblitly is when you ride english you have more contact. The western horses you have to ride english without contact for a while and gradually pick up your contact.

I agree english is MUCH better, it's also easier on horses joints.
Reply:mabe lunge line her in the english saddle un til shes use to it mabe 15-20 mins aday dont work her so hard then hwen you think shes ok get on her !!!!
Reply:Because she is used to being ridden western, riding English is different to her and she is not used to it. If you don't like western continue to ride her in the English manner until she gets used to it.

However, I ride bareback 99% of my time and English 1%. I have an Arabian horse named Moon. He's solid white. I also have around 70 quarter horses. The reason I ride bareback is that I can tell what my horse is going to do by the shift of weight and tension in the muscles. It makes you one with the horse. I know one must ride with a saddle. I trained myself to ride from books and I started at 6 years old, riding first with a halter and a hay string to graduating to a bridle when I mastered riding the horse. This is unusual, yes. But it's the best way to learn horse language. Blowing in the horse's nose is the way to greet your horse. This is how other horse's greet each other. Being patient when you're teaching new things teaches both you and the horse how to depend on each other. Give her time to accept the English saddle.

OK, Stormy needs to go some place where she can't see her just for a little while. You might not have picked up on this but I think it is part of the problem. It's very subtle. You could easily miss the cue that Daisy is distracted by Stormy.
Reply:Are you sure she puts her head down like she is going to buck or she is just putting her head down the way she should for an english please horse? normally u do like the horse to lower their head but if they are threatening to buck you off or something of that sort then you should not let her.

if you ride her western she is good? have you thought about maybe its the saddle? maybe it doesn't fit her right so every time u ask her to do something it hurts and she wants the pain to go away. my horse was like that until i bought him the new bate saddle with the changeable gullets. it was like a miracle! check if the saddle fits her correctly. next maybe try riding her bareback? she may like that. you are closer to her so u can feel what she is going to do. you can also try a different bit. it could be hurting her also. if you have tried these things and nothing works ask your trainer or a trainer to ride her and see whats going on in her head.

Good Luck
Reply:Since western horses keep their heads low a lot, its probably not that she's going to buck as much as she's just comfortable with her head at the heigth. If you want her to pick it up, every time she lowers it pull up on the reigns, but dont pull back like you want her to stop. Just up. I hope this works for you and good luck.
Reply:learn western even if you dont like it and once you and ur horse know each other better then try training her on lunge line with english saddle and see what she does. get her used to that. then put a little weight on and if she acts ok then try ridin her again but take it slow. baby steps are always good.
Reply:I'm surprised nobody has mentioned this to you yet, but 80% of bucking problems are related to back pain. The mere fact that it occurs only using a different saddle means it's nothing in the bit (what a dumb idea-bit problems produce chomping/head-tossing problems). Most likely the length and width of a western saddle distrubutes weight in a way that doesn't irritate a sore spot that the compact size of an english saddle does.

1. Try a different, more supportive pad. Nowadays there are a myriad of theraputic pads from neoprene to gel to foam. If she's got high withers get an extra riser, if she's long backed get something through the spine.

If that dosn't work...

2. Try getting a different style saddle. If you're using an all-purpose of jumping style english saddle, try a dressage or endurance saddle which have more surface area.

3. Get a horse chiropractor, I've seen them work miracles on otherwise "problem horses". It might cost you, but not as much as getting a dependable english-accepting mount. Horses were not biologically designed to have over 100 pounds of bouncy weight carried on their SPINES but that's exactly what they're used for. They have things go out on them just like people and they need the same kind of adjustments we do.

There's nothing wrong with you or your horse, I'm almost positive she just needs some tack adjustments and she'll be fine.
Reply:well that is a hard to answer question, but teaching her some discipline would be good, otherwise she will , if she hasn't already , learn to walk all over you (not literally). she needs to know that you re the boss and she does what you want!! so if you teach her English that will gain you some respect from her. i also don't think that her sister is a big part of the problem, but it probably has some kind of effect, like maby she feels she has to show off in front of her.
Reply:i would have a horse trainer train her for a little bit in English
Reply:I would suggest taking riding lessons on her
Reply:get to know your horse spend time with it
Reply:My Standardbred was a big bucker as well.

I didn't feel comfortable having to use a stronger bit than a D Ring on him (even though everyone said to) so I would lunge him for about half an hour before riding.

He could get all his bucks out there and would behave wonderfully under saddle for me. It might be something you can try for your mare.
Reply:The most likely answer I can think of is that the saddle doesn't fit. The English saddle could be pinching her withers or be putting too much pressure on her lower back. Did you know that about 80% of America's saddles don't fit their horse? It's really worthwhile to make sure that the saddle fits and if it doesn't, find a new one. If you don't know how to tell if it fits or not, call a vet or a saddle fitter.

If this does not make a difference, check yourself when you're riding. Tensing up, jerking on the reins, keeping pressure on the reins, or kicking her sides will definitely make her buck. If you feel you get nervous when you ride her because you're anticipating her buck, gain your confidence back on another horse. If you aren't already, take lessons on a calm, trustworthy horse until you are comfortable with your seat and balance while riding.

How old is Daisy? If she is young, she probably wasn't broke efficiently. If you and your grandma are confident and experienced riders, than you have a relationship problem with your horse. Most likely, she considers herself dominant over you. Have a trainer help you with achieving alpha status with your horse. On the other hand, she may be scared when you ride her, especially if she's young. In this case, start from the ground up, gaining her trust.

It's up to you to identify the problem with your horse, and your responsibility to fix it. I hope this helped get off your feet. Like I said, I highly suspect that the English saddle you are using doesn't fit, since you mentioned she does better with the Western saddle. This problem can then simply be fixed by getting an English saddle that does fit, but make sure she isn't sore when you start riding her again. Good luck

Slushie machine - can I use sea salt instead of rock salt?

OK, we have bought a home slushie machine to the kids' delight. I have to add rock salt with some ice to the outside of the machine to help chill it (similar to how ice cream was made in the old days). Just went to the shop, and there was only one kind of rock salt and zillions of sea salt. The sea salt appears to be the same type of consistency as the rock salt. Can I use it in the slushie machine to get the same results? Thanks, Daisy.

Slushie machine - can I use sea salt instead of rock salt?
It would be very pricey. You would need a lot more sea salt due to the granule size but it would work.
Reply:Yep. The only diff should be the price. It's all basically the same stuff.

?ü? Can you write a little story that includes 6 of these phrases?
"Each virtue most rare her soul possesses," said Grandpa. "Your grandmother was a rare combination of sunshine and kisses, happiness and love, honesty and faithfulness; she was courageous yet meek, wise as well as moral, and passionate about life and fairness."

"No one can be that good *all* the time!" shouted Jane excitedly, bouncing up and down on the bed in excitement.

"Ah, but your grandmother was, little one," said Grandpa softly. "The heart that has truly loved never forgets and is never forgotten, you see. Your Grandma and I loved each other deeply, and I will never forget her. The first time we met, she was looking for a daisy. A happy daisy, in the garden path, she said. I thought she was nuts at first. How can a daisy be happy?"

Jane said, "Maybe the daisy had a really good day, Grandpa! Or maybe it was a really *good* daisy." Grandpa chuckled. "I'm sure you're correct, little one," he said. "That's what Grandma said to me, anyway."

"You see the crazy gypsy in my soul sees joy everywhere, in all of God's creatures, especially flowers," said Grandpa. "That's how Grandma explained it to me, and I've agreed with it ever since. When we found that happy daisy, I placed it behind her ear and told her she was even more joyous and beautiful (which of course means her inside virtues shining through to the outside to make pretty into beautiful) than the happy daisy. With gentle words I courted her."

"And then you got married!" exclaimed Jane, bouncing in excitement again. "Yes, and then we got married," agreed Grandpa. "It was a splendiferous day outside - the glens with their meadows of sunshine and dew all around us. The flowers were like friends, seeming to have the loving voices of old companions, so often and well had we courted each other."

"Iiiiiiick," said Jane. Her grandfather guffawed in delight. "Ick indeed, little one! When you have loved truly as your grandma and I did, you will understand."

"I don't think so," said Jane, stomping on the cold remains of what began with a passionate start with her utter refusal to join the magical picture being painted. "Ah, but you will, little one," said Grandpa. "You see you are just as virtuous as Grandma was, and you have the same crazy gypsy blood in your soul as we do! Just trust me on this, child, and give it a little time."

"If you say so, Grandpa," said Jane, still doubting but willing to trust for the moment. Grandpa'd never been wrong before, after all! "What happened when she died, Grandpa? How did you get through it if you loved each other so much and she was that terrific?"

"At first it was like fairy gifts fading away," said Grandpa. "Each dream and love and hope we'd had together just slipped through my fingers, drifting away, and I just watched in sadness from afar." He quickly picked up on the tears in Jane's eyes, and said, "But soon I remembered that happy daisy, and I knew that if I just remembered Grandma in my heart, she would always be there. Just as you are always in her heart and she in yours even though you never got to meet, dear one." Jane gave a little sigh, and slipped into sleep.

Her grandfather, looking sad and introspective, brushed her hair off her face and kissed her cheek. "It wasn't *quite* that simple," he thought. "But that's a story for another time. Perhaps in another year or two, when summer is just past and autumn leaves lie thick and still. That would be a good time to talk about her unfortunate death - the time when the world reflects the same spirit." And he quietly turned out the light, left the room, and sat listening to old 45's and reminiscing late into the night.

The heart that has truly loved never forgets, and a happy daisy, in the garden path, with loving voices of old companions, and gentle words I courted her. The glens with their meadows of sunshine and dew, each virtue most rare her soul possesses. And autumn leaves lie thick and still, to the sounds of her struggling against her will.

Like fairy gifts fading away(3), the last remnant of the twilight disappears into the blackness that is the October night. Loving voices of old companions(6) can be heard over the crackling fire, adding a special ambiance and aura that won't be replaced until morning by the glens, with their meadows of sunshine and dew(8). One of those voices I recognize as my own.

I recall how with gentle words, I courted her(7) in days gone by. She knows, even as I do, that the heart that has truly loved never forgets(4), and yet I know she'll strive to become unable to recollect. I look into her eyes, the window to her soul, and my own heart notes that each virtue most rare her soul possesses(9).

"Why must it be this way?" I ask her. "Of all the people I have ever known, only you see the crazy gypsy in my soul(1) and are not frightened away."

"Circumstances," is her reply. "Under others, we could have been together. But you've made your choices and I've made mine," she explains.

"It's not just circumstances," I retort. "You made this choice. It's not like you're just a happy daisy, in the garden path(5). You deliberately chose this, and that's what saddens me."

"I know," she says. "I'm sorry." She smiles at me, and on my cheek, she plants what seems to be an obligatory kiss, the cold remains of what began with a passionate start(2). As I watch her disappear into the night for what might possibly be the final time, I recall how I thought our love could conquer anything; How our relationship was like a tree that towered over everything else. But now, I see that things are different. The newness of the spring has long since disappeared, the invincibility of the summer has faded, and autumn leaves lie thick and still(10).

I'll never love like that again.

I miss the Earth sometimes, the glens with their meadows of sunshine and dew, and autumn leaves lie thick and still. The heart that has truly loved never forgets, and I'd never forget the planet of my birth and youth. Here, a happy daisy, in the garden path, there the loving voices of old companions.

I picture a face before me, the face of my former best beloved Traci Sinclair. Each virtue most rare her soul possesses, except maybe forgiveness. With gentle words I courted her, and with violent action I set our divorce in motion.

I was getting maudlin, space-happy. I hear that it happens to all of us. Luckily, the threat board alarm sounded. "Two ships, eight missiles, projectiles incoming," said the threat board.

I sighed, and gave the commands to send twelve of my missiles on their way. Like fairy gifts fading away, the missiles faded into the darkness of space, to deliver my kiss to my enemies.

Not long after, the debris of the battle drifted past, the cold remains of what began with a passionate start.

In my young adulthood, I spent a good long time wandering. Even now, you see the crazy gypsy in my soul. The mothership, the Alice, loomed before me as I maneuvered toward the grappler. In my spare time, maybe, I'd paint a motto on the nose of my fighter. "We live and die for those we love." I remember seeing it painted on a wall, some time in my youth, but the words had been curiously organized so it looked like it was saying "We live for those we love and die." A smile curved my lips. Yes, that appealed to my sense of humor.

Edit:

I like my story... and I like Scotty's just as much. Hm. I must try harder next time!
Reply:(7)With gentle words I courted her. Or so I thought. Lou, that's my best friend, said that maybe I shouldn't have opened with "Hey sugar t***, ya want a beer?".

Oh yes, my mother always said that I should always listen to the (6) Loving voices of old companions. Well Lou is about as dumb as dirt so I don't pay to much heed to what he says. 'specially when he starts popping off with weird stuff like (2) "The cold remains of what began with a passionate start". WTF!?

Anyway, since the sugar t** thing didn't work so well, I figured I'd try something different. So I invited her back to my trailer for a fine time. I told her about my yard. About my lawn art. (5) A happy daisy in the garden path, will help cover up the empty beer cans that decorate my yard. Along with the gnomes, I think that's what they're called, but they're more (3) like fairy gifts fading away since my neighbor shot most of them up.

Anyway, we had a pretty good time even though she drank up all my beer and puked in the sink. I did get a little nervous when, just before she hurled, she said (1) "You see the crazy gypsy in my soul?". I don't know about her soul, but I did check to see if my wallet was still in my jeans. Seeing that it was still there, I didn't give too much truck to her telling me that (9) "Each virtue most rare her soul possesses". I ain't gonna worry about that seein' as how I don't have any virtues, let alone rare ones, for her to possess.

The next morning we woke and observed the magic of the fall season. The air was cool (10) and autumn leaves lie thick and still. Which was a good thing because that '56 Dodge in the front yard looks pretty bad since it fell off the blocks last year.

Later Lou came by and asked if (4) the heart that has truly loved, never forgets? I can't say too much about my heart, but I can say that one part of me will remember her fondly.

Now If I could just find my wallet..........

In Virtual Villagers the lost children where is the medical cactus?

Is it one of these? If so which one.

-The green plant in the upper left hanging over the wall of stones.

-The blue flower at the top center just to the right of the cave.

-The lavender daisy at the far top-right above the sacred area.

-The black chain of flowers just above the waterfall on the east.

-The bright red flowers southeast of the dam.

-The large orange flower to the south of the village.

In Virtual Villagers the lost children where is the medical cactus?
The medical cactus is in Virtual Villagers: A New Home, not The Lost Children. However, all of the above plants will do the same thing as the medical cactus. If, after you solve the puzzle consisting of the mastery of these six plants, you drag a villager to one of these plants, they will show an increase in healing ability.

Hope this helps!

Looking for a Yorkie Puppy in the RI MASS Area?

I have been searching for a yorkie female puppy around RI and Mass for my Grandmother. She lost her dog Daisy last year to cancer and is in need of a new friend. I am not looking to spend more then $500.00 .She is home all the time and can provide a loving home. Any suggestions are grately apperciated.

Looking for a Yorkie Puppy in the RI MASS Area?
I'll go ahead assume you've spoken to your grandmother about getting this new puppy as that's the correct and responsible way to go about it. Be sure to include her in the process as well, dogs are quite personal, and everyone wants to pick their own pup.

You can try petfinder.com, your local pound, the classified section of your local newspaper, a Yorkshire Terrier rescue group, or look for a reputable breeder in your area (certainly not a "cheap" option, but always a good option to keep in mind).

You can find breeders through these sites:

http://www.ytca.org/

http://www.akc.org/breeders/index.cfm

Some rescues:

http://www.yorkierescue.com/

http://www.unitedyorkierescue.org/

http://www.yorkierescueme.com/

http://www.barkbytes.com/rescue/yorkie.h...

A quick google search will also pull up more Yorkshire Terrier rescue groups for you as well. You can also add your state to the search to get more results for your area.

Hope this helps, and good luck in your search.

Genealogy is the research of your family history. Most of our ancestors are dead. While you're here do you have a genealogy question we may try to help with?
Reply:I am sorry that you lost touch with your old friend. But unfortunately, we aren't the right group to approach for questions like this. We search for the dead, but have an ethical obligation to protect the privacy of the living. Of course, you may do well to visit the Law Enforcement board where police officers and private detectives routinely answer questions. But ethically, we genealogists should never try posting personal information about the living on a board where literally the whole world is snooping around.

Whose the writer of Daisy Miller?

The father of the American novel, Henry James. This novel is the first of his works that discuss the cultural differences between America and Europe. It is almost like seeing America as the flirtateous innocent young nation it was during the Victorian Age, who sees no class lines but rather is struggling with the freedom to judge people based on their individuality, their individual differences, rather than by their sameness, their classes. Daisy is a young American living in Europe, in Switzerland, when she encounters the ancient European rules of behavior for the different gender roles as well as the social classes. Her life, and death, actually teaches the Europeans to look at themselves more honestly than their rules usually has allowed them to do so. And, yet, like a child, she looks at the Europeans with a longing for their approval, their esteem, and it acts as a symbol for how America was looking for the same kind of esteem from its older relative, Europe, with tragic results, the result of all innocence in this world, death.

James is a very deep thinker, and his works are very complex works of art. Never has been so much written about an American author as Henry James, and with good cause.

Whose the writer of Daisy Miller?
Oh God... I had repressed the memory of reading that book. I had to read it for an undergrad lit class along with a few other of Henry James' stories. I hated every minute of it. He's got to be the most overrated author in the American canon.

Does watering daisies with colored water effect how tall they grow?

Please list you source(s). and no fooling / joking around!

Does watering daisies with colored water effect how tall they grow?
Why not try doing an expiriment. From What I have done in middle school giving daisy colored water will result in changing the colors of the petals. The reason why is because dye isn't something the roots can break down. So instead it just sends it off with the rest of the plants causing those areas to become colored.
Reply:It will not effect how tall they will grow but will defo change the colour of the petals.

Why didn't Britney Spears Get The Part In Daisy Duke?

I was just wondering because they gave it to Jessica Simpson and the movie didnt even do that good.....and they said the reason they didnt give it to britney because her first movie was a flop!

Why didn't Britney Spears Get The Part In Daisy Duke?
Why does ANY actress get ANY part? The powers that be decided on Jessica... And if they said they didn't want Britney cuz of her past performance, then there's your answer.

I think they should've used a brunette actress, but they obviously didn't think that was important.
Reply:Because she wasn't as physically "hot" as Jessica Simpson at the time of the casting. Also, at that time, Jessica Simpson had real buzz due to her MTV show and her marriage to Nick Lachey.
Reply:Well, for starters Brit was preggers at the time I think or just had a baby. That would not have been real pretty in a pink bikini.

Heres a better question, why do you care?
Reply:Probably because she didnt lose her baby fat and she acts like a slut
Reply:Because Britney can't act!
Reply:You're kidding right? Oh well it doesn't matter chances are she isn't going to be around Hollywood much longer anyways.

Who thinks Daisy Should have Won Bret Michael's Rock of Love?

Okay, i'm very disappointed to see that Ambre won, i dont understand it at all.

He seems so in love with her, and they are perfect!

He stressed it so many times that he is crazy about her and that she might be the girl for him!

Do u think VH1 Payed Bret to pick Ambre??

Bret didnt seem happy and excited when he chose Ambre!

Do you think Daisy, and him will reunite?

this is bothering me , cause Daisy is the one for him.

Who thinks Daisy Should have Won Bret Michael's Rock of Love?
I actually thought Daisy was going to win.I wanted her to win.Ambre was nothing but a piece of trash, and a hypocrite. She was always trying to call the other girls out out on something they did,and she was lying about her age the whole time.I think Ambre is fake, and I never did like her.Trust me,they won't be together very long.I'm sure there will be a number 3 to this show.

I also want to comment on Heather.I think Heather is no-good instigating piece of crap. Why the hell was she on the show again?I'm sick of Heather thinking that she's still 22 yrs old, running around looking like a washed up two dollar Whore. She makes me sick.I also think she is fake, just like Ambre.
Reply:Yeah I think Daisy should have won, just because she fit the whole rocker lifestyle and looks like she can be with Bret. Ambre (which by the way, why doesn't she spell it Amber?) wanted to start fights with girls, she was always the one to say "I feel so bad saying this but I need to put it out there and get it off my chest..." Ambre just wanted to be on TV probably to promote her show that she says she hosts or whatever. I don't think Daisy and him will reunite, he is probably with some other girl that we don't even know, none of these reality shows ever really work out, but they are fun to watch. :)
Reply:Idk I think VH1 has a say in it. I thought Dasiy would win honestly, and he seemed so hurt when he said her tour ended, he was crying

But....I heard so many rumors that he is rele with kristy jo??!?

Wtf though I became angry when I saw the preview for the reality show, where heather was beating up Daisy

(Heather your trash, who lost last year why is she still around, just gets me annoyed)
Reply:i knew that Ambre was gonna win from the last show becasue they had a long time to talk to hang out and stuff. but daisy doesn't really have eperience in a steady relationship so yeah. but i don't like ambre... she thinks she is sooo smart but she is just old and snobby!
Reply:Ambre is a liar and Daisy is ALL for Bret, me and my sis thought it was just a waste of an hour watching it if he picked Ambre. Yep he only did it so he can "find more love" (code word: GET MORE MONEY off the spinoffs..) Sad and a waste of time...AMBRE???? UGH.
Reply:i thought she was going to win......... i was surprised. She is def. hot, but Amber is more mature.... maybe he wants to settle down with someone wants and for all.

ok.... why the hell am i answering this.........(im straight)
Reply:Daisy should not have won because she stills lives with her ex and plus all she and Bret had was a physical connection. Yeah she's pretty but Ambre was the best choice for him.
Reply:I was glad that Ambre won.
Reply:He'll forget about them both in 1 mo.
Reply:who cares? i'm sure they've started filming 'rock of love 3' already.....
Reply:every Vh1 show is fixed.

why would a slutty girl like New York pick that rich dude? seriously!

Guitar pedals and daisy chains?

I am a novice and have recently been given 4 pedals however when i plug them all together (with a daisy chain) and press a pedal they create a noise from the amp. (the noise stops when i only plaug in 1 or 2 but i want to have all four plugged in for different songs) How do i stop this noise?

Guitar pedals and daisy chains?
First off...check your cables....

Check the settings on each pedal. To start, turn them all 'down'....But rule of thumb, the more pedals the more hum .

So it is possible that when using all your pedals they'll hum. You can use a noise gate pedal to overcome that.

Does anyone know where I can find the "Get out of bed, you daisy head" alarm clock from the movie Sister Act?

I'm a huge fan of this movie, and it would bring me eternal joy to wake up to this greeting every morning. If you know anything about this alarm clock, I would be grateful for any bit of information.

Thanks!

Does anyone know where I can find the "Get out of bed, you daisy head" alarm clock from the movie Sister Act?
That clock hasn't been around in stores since the md eighties. Where they came across it is a mystery. The only place you may find one is in a collectors auction.

The best you could probably do is to look for alarm clocks that allow vocal recordings to be used as the alarm, and say "Get out of bed, you daisy head" yourself (or get a child you know to)

Daisies (both yellow and white) with which pink or fuchsia flower?

Sorry, again but this time for the people in the garden section. I want flower arrangements with yellow and white daisies (the little ones not gerberas) but also a pink or fuchsia flower. I think they need a hint of color... Any recomendations? Thanks.

Daisies (both yellow and white) with which pink or fuchsia flower?
you can add gerberas for extra colour and I think they would look nice with "normal" daisies

carnations are also nice (I don't like bunches of carnations alone but mixed they add nice colour)

snapdragons are interesting looking and colourful

sweet peas are adorable

with daises I would add something "natural" looking, I think something like an orchid would look wrong together
Reply:if lilacs are in bloom they would be grand; if not, a few pink roses
Reply:Daisies are small flowers so think small. I wouldn'tv choose fuchia because it will kill the delicate look of the daisies
Reply:The best way that I have to add this color in this type of format with these flowers is:

Use a clear vase with the glass colored beads in the color that you are striving for.

However, you could possiblely use maybe carnations that have been dyed.

The Death Daisy only appears after a sim has died. When they die a grave rock appears in their place. If you Mourn at the grave rock a daisy will grow. You can then pick the daisy and use it to make the potion if you want to.

Wow....... so you are in a flower mood? Whatever gave you such a green thumb today? Ok so your thumb isn't so green.... Botany sure is.

But to answer your question.....They should get the sex change operations. If Paul n Nate want to be pansies..... let them! Daisy has no right to stop them. She should stay quiet. Mum's the word. She shouldn't expect tulips to touch hers if those lips crave different roots.
Reply:Not much botany humor around here. However, I guess that topic has been deflowered now.

Does anyone know how to make the perfect pair of cut off (daisy dukes) jean shorts?

Try them on. mark where you want to cut them with a pen. cut them. wash and dry them. fringe the ends with a needle.

Does anyone know how to make the perfect pair of cut off (daisy dukes) jean shorts?
NO I'm not a slut
Reply:Yes, you can take a pair of old jeans, and mark them with chalk on where you want the cuts to go and then try them on and check it out in the mirror and then cut. You can add rhinestones, fray the edges, and cut a peekhole in the pocket area - go wild and crazy or just go short and kinda crazy either way they will turn out great - Oh, and you can throw splashes of bleach on them to make raindrops or other effects. Have funs and not tooooooooo short.

What color do gerber daisies come in?

More specifically, how many different colors?

What color do gerber daisies come in?
Aw, I love gerberas...they're my absolute favorite.

They come in quite a few colors naturally - they normally range in color anywhere from yellow to deep orange, with some varieties of white, cream, pink, red, crimson and even violet. Plus, like lots of other flowers, they can be dyed to any number of other shades if so desired.

Hope that helps.
Reply:In nature these ray flowers range in color from yellow to deep orange but selected varieties extend the color palette to include white, cream, pink, red, crimson and even violet
Reply:over the last couple years i have seen at least 30 different colors of gerberas daisies. I have 8 different colors in pots around myhouse still left over from the wedding.

Typically most often you will find pinks, oranges, yellows and reds but they have such a huge range of colors to choose from. Only color span i havent seen is blue but im sure that will come out in a few years too.

Honestly, who do you think Will Win Bret Michael's ROCK OF LOVE? Daisy or Ambre???

I love Daisy, and i believe they are perfect for eachother!!

who really cars about the past!! Bret has one too..!!! He's keeping her for a reason!!! What do u guys think??

Honestly, who do you think Will Win Bret Michael's ROCK OF LOVE? Daisy or Ambre???
I think he really likes Daisy. So I have to say Daisy. All though, she did say there is one secret she hasn't told that could ruin this. So if Ambre finds that out it could be over.

I used to want Ambre to win. Out of all the girls she seemed like the most real. However she has become a real tattle tale. I just don't like her at all any longer. How immature is it to lie about your age and then cry about it when you get caught?

After last show, I think Destiny would have been the best out of the three. She was the only one mature enough to realize that there is no way a person could honestly love you back when he has feelings for two others. How stupid Brett was to fall for girls' lines.

All I can say is I see season 3 in the future.

I would love if at the end he picked Heather and she comes strolling up outta no where.

I read somewhere that when Christy Joe left the show, she really just moved into his bedroom and that the rest of the show was staged. How crazy would that be? Insane right? LOL.

Outta the two left I think it will be Daisy or neither in all honesty.

Can't wait for Season 3!!!
Reply:I sort of like Daisy -- after all the junk those other girls have put her through, she has proven herself to be a tough girl. However, she is pretty high maintenance. I think Ambre is more attractive though, and probably better suited for Bret just because of her outlook, and even though I like Daisy I think he'll choose Ambre. Daisy may have just been kept because she has an interesting story EVERY episode!
Reply:i want ambre to win
Reply:I know Daisy will win because she has already sucked/fuqkd Brett like 500 times

The game Sims 2 castaway, how do I get the death daisy?

You can only get the Death Daisy if one of your sims dies accidentally.

If one of your sims is dead, from your crew all you do is mourn on their grave, and the death daisy will grow there. Just pick the death daisy up, and get the ingredients for it. And then you'll rez your sims. ***If no sim is dead, their is no need to get a death daisy***.

Materials needed:

-You need to retrieve blood oranges on the second island where the crashed plain is at.

-The rest of the materials you probably have or ask the monkeys to gather them for you, if you don't want to get them.

Hope it helps, good luck!

PLEASE COMMENT!!!

Does anyone know where to buy a daisy rock guitar??
You can buy them several places on line, but beware, they are not very good guitars. If you are a beginner, it might be OK for a little while, but you will out grow it fast. Trust me, as a girl guitar player, I know it can be tempting to buy a "pretty" guitar, but always play a few before you make a purchase. Otherwise you may end up with a gorgeous turd. Daisy May (O'Dwyer) Bates (1863-1951) was an Irish-Australian journalist, welfare worker and lifelong student of Australian Aboriginal culture and society. She was known among the native people as 'Kabbarli' (grandmother).

Bates was born Daisy May O'Dwyer in Tipperary, Ireland circa 1863. Her mother died when she was young, and her hard-drinking father ran off with another woman and died en route to the United States, so Bates was raised and educated in an orphanage near Dublin.

In 1884 at the age of twenty-one she migrated to Australia on the Almora. Some accounts (presumably based on Bates's own claims) say that she left Ireland for 'health reasons', but Bates's biographer Julia Blackburn discovered that, after getting her first job as a governess in Dublin at age 18, there was a scandal, presumably sexual in nature, which resulted in the young man of the house taking his own life. Bates was forced to leave Ireland and, keen to cover up her sordid past, she re-invented her history, setting a pattern for the rest of her life. It was not until long after her death that the true facts of her early life emerged.

Bates settled first at Townsville, Queensland, staying first at the home of the Bishop of North Queensland and later with family friends who had migrated earlier. She subsequently found employment as a governess on Fanning Downs Station.

Records show that she married poet and horseman Breaker Morant (Harry Morant aka Edwin Murrant) on 13 March 1884; the union lasted only a short time and Bates reputedly threw Morant out because he failed to pay for the wedding and stole some livestock. Significantly, they were never divorced. Morant's biographer Nick Bleszynski suggests that Bates played a more important role in Morant's life than has been previously thought, and that it was she who convinced him to change his name from Edwin Murrant to Harry Harbord Morant.

Soon after her failed marriage to Morant, Bates moved to New South Wales, immersing herself in social life; she became engaged to Philip Gipps, but he died before they could marry. She then met John Bates and they married on 17 February 1885; like Morant, he was a breaker of wild horses, bushman and drover. The bigamous nature of their marriage was kept secret during Bates's lifetime.

Their only child, Arthur Hamilton Bates was born in Bathurst, New South Wales on 26 August 1886. The marriage was not a happy one, so Bates travelled widely, including Tasmania, and often visited inland towns or stations. Although she was at first quite well-off financially, she lost most of the money given to her husband and the remainder during the depression and the disastrous bank crashes of 1892.

In February 1894 Bates returned to England, telling Arthur that she would only return when he had a home established for her. She arrived in England penniless but eventually she found a job as a journalist. It was not until 1899 that she heard from her husband again, who wrote saying that he was looking for a property in Western Australia.

[edit] Involvement with Australian Aboriginal people

At about this time a letter was published in The Times about the cruelty of West Australian settlers to Aborigines. As Bates was preparing to return to Australia, she wrote to The Times offering to make full investigations and report the results to them. Her offer was accepted and she sailed back to Australia in August 1899.

In all, Bates devoted more than 35 years of her life to studying Aboriginal life, history, culture, rites, beliefs and customs. Living in a tent in small settlements from Western Australia to the edges of the Nullarbor Plain, notably at Ooldea in South Australia, she researched and wrote millions of words on the subject. She was also famed for her strict lifelong adherence to Edwardian fashion, including boots, gloves and a veil.

She also worked tirelessly for Aboriginal welfare, setting up camps to feed, clothe and nurse the transient population, drawing on her own income to meet the needs of the aged. She fought against the policy of having native people assimilated into white Australian society and resisted the sexual expoitation of Aboriginal women by white men. She was said to have worn pistols even in her old age and to have been quite prepared to use them to threaten police when she caught them mistreating 'her' Aborigines.

[edit] Western Australia

On her return voyage she met Father Dean Martelli, a Roman Catholic priest who had worked with Aborigines and who gave her an insight into the conditions they faced. She found a school and home for her son in Perth, invested some of her money in property as a security for her old age, bought note books and supplies and left for the state's remote north-west to gather information on Aborigines and the effects of white settlement.

She wrote articles about conditions around Port Hedland and other areas for geographical society journals, local newspapers and The Times. This experience kindled her life-long interest in the lives and welfare of Aboriginal people in Western and South Australia.

Based at the Beagle Bay Mission near Broome, Bates, now thirty-six, began her life's work. Her accounts, among the first attempts at a serious study of Aboriginal culture, were published in the Journal of Agriculture and later by anthropological and geographical societies in Australia and overseas.

While at the mission she also compiled a local dictionary of several dialects, comprising some two thousand words and sentences, as well as notes on legends and myths. In April 1902 Bates, accompanied by her son and her husband, set out on a droving trip from Broome to Perth. It provided good material for her articles but after spending six months in the saddle and travelling four thousand kilometres, Bates knew that her marriage was over.

Following her final separation from Bates in 1902, she spent most of the rest of her life in outback Western and South Australia, studying and working for the remote Aboriginal tribes, who were being decimated by the incursions of European settlement and the introduction of modern technology, western culture and exotic diseases.

In 1904, the Registrar General's Department of Western Australia appointed her to research Aboriginal customs, languages and dialects, a task which took nearly six years to compile and arrange the data. Many of her papers were read at Geographical and Royal Society meetings.

In 1910-1911 she served as the only woman on a British outback expedition led by Professor Alfred Radcliffe-Brown. She was appointed a 'Travelling Protector' with a special commission to conduct inquiries into all native conditions and problems, such as employment on stations, guardianship and the morality of native and half-caste women in towns and mining camps.

Bates later came into conflict with Radcliffe-Brown because she sent him her manuscript report of the expedition. Much to Bates's chagrin, it was not returned for many years and when it came back it was heavily annotated with Radcliffe-Brown's critical remarks. The conflict culminated in a famous incident at a symposium, where Bates virtually accused Radcliffe-Brown of plagiarising her work -- Bates was scheduled to speak after Radcliffe-Brown had presented his paper, but when she rose it was only to sarcastically compliment him on his thorough presentation of her work, after which she resumed her seat.

[edit] A "protector of Aborigines"

After 1912, when her application to become the Northern Territory's Protector of Aborigines was rejected on basis of her gender, Bates continued her work on her own, financing it by selling her cattle station.

The same year she became the first woman ever to be appointed Honorary Protector of Aborigines at Eucla. During the sixteen months she spent there, Bates changed from a semi-professional scientist and ethnologist to a staunch friend and protector of the Aborigines, deciding to live among them and look after them, and to observe and record their lives and lifestyle. In spite of her fascination with their way fo life, Bates was convinced that the Australian Aborigines were a dying race and that her mission was to record as much as she could about them before they disappeared.

Bates stayed at Eucla till 1914 when she travelled to Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney to attend the Science Congress of the Association for the Advancement of Science. Before returning to the desert, she gave lectures in Adelaide which aroused the interests of several women's organisations.

During her years at Ooldea she financed the supplies she bought for the Aborigines from the sale of her property. To maintain her income she wrote numerous articles and papers for newspapers, magazines and learned societies. Through journalist and author Ernestine Hill, Bates's work was introduced to the general public, although much of the publicity tended to focus on her sensational stories of cannibalism.

In August 1933 the Commonwealth Government invited Bates to Canberra to advise on Aboriginal affairs. The next year she was created a Commander of the Order of the British Empire by King George V. More important to Bates was the opportunity to put her work in print.

[edit] South Australia

She left Ooldea and went to Adelaide where, with the help of Ernestine Hill, she produced a series of articles for leading Australian newspapers, titled My Natives and I.

Aged seventy-one, she still walked every day to her office at The Advertiser building. Later the Commonwealth Government paid her a stipend of $4 a week to assist her in putting all her papers and notes in order and prepare her manuscript. But with no other income it was impossible for her to remain in Adelaide so she moved to the village settlement of Pyap on the Murray River where she pitched her tent and set up her typewriter.

In 1938, she published The Passing of the Aborigines which caused controversy due to its claims of cannibalism and infanticide amongst clans such as the Nyool-Nyool, Bibbulmun, Baduwonga, Kaalurwonga and Baadu.

[edit] Final years

In 1941 she went back to her tent life at Wynbring Siding, east of Ooldea, and she remained there on and off until ill health forced her back to Adelaide in 1945.

Daisy Bates died on 18 April 1951, aged around 88. She is buried at Adelaide's North Road Cemetery. Her life was the basis for the Margaret Sutherland opera The Young Kabbarli.

How do I stop squirrels from beheading my flowers??
Those bassterds! They're doing the same thing to my Pansies! I heard that you can plant some sort of ball that deters them from digging, maybe cedar?
Reply:Sprinkle a good amount of regular black pepper around them. You can buy a pepper based critter repellant from home improvement stores but it's price and, of course, made with red pepper. Black is less expensive than red. It works to keep cats out of my garden. They were using it for a potty!
Reply:Cayenne pepper mixed with vaseline on a tree trunk with a feeder above. 90 percent chance they will get a good dose of red hot and beat a trail out....for awhile....you know small brain..short memory. May have to repeat this until they get the picture,at least this worked on the militant squirrels in my yard. They snatched their last Snapdragon,I hope.

Good Luck. Ed.S.

Also, your state Extension Service, from the university of your state, will have access to that information. Also, most garden catalogswill have photos and proper latin names.

Any ideas for a birthday cake for my daughters 1st birthday next week?
when my daughter was 1, I made her a bunny cake- I used two round cake pans and one round cake was the head and the other I cut into three sections to make the ears and bow tie. I then used one color icing to cover the cake and different kinds of candies for details. It was very cheap but very cute.

I have seen other neat designs make with a simple patter of cutting a round, rectangle or square cake just the right way. You might also consider using cupcakes to make a cupcake cake- put them close together frost them green and make little flowers to put on top, or make a long caterpillar with different colored sprinkles on them and candies for the face.

Reply:Make a Daisy shaped cake your daughter and your guests will like it.
Reply:It's worth noting that you can take simple rectangular, square, and round cakes and shape them into something neat, just by cutting them apart and reassembling them...remember the slice and bake cookies where you could take ONE circle shape, cut it into wedges and then arrange them and it baked into the shape of an angel? That's what I'm talking about.

A heart might be all you need. Get a round layer pan and a square cake pan the same width across and bake your cakes in these. You would angle the square on the center of your serving board, making a diamond, then cut the circle in half and put each half straight side against adjacent sides (on the top) to finish the heart shape. Frost it as one large cake in white, and polka dot it in red or pink with happy birthday and a candle.

You could also just do a pretty layer cake in circles or a 9x13 cake that you frost with white and decorate with colored sugars.

You could do a Bundt cake, it is a purchase of another pan but these are pretty versatile for future use, you can make sticky buns, angel food cake, jello molds, punch bowl ice rings, etc in these pans.

With the cake tipped upside down it is ready to have a simple thin icing drizzled on top. Very elegant, I would do a white cake (or confetti cake mix) with pink frosting for her, or a white frosting with a dusting of cocoa or colored powdered sugar that you dyed yourself, or colored granulated sugar...maybe the cake is served with strawberries or a pretty pastel colored ice cream.

You can cut costs by dying your own sugars and making the cake yourself, but you could also buy premade cake decorating items or have a half sheet cake made at the bakery, undecorated, and shape and decorate it yourself, which would save you on pan costs.
Reply:Why not just go for a cake in a shape of a one white with pink piping , as long as it is tasty a One Year old will think its great and simplicity is class .
Reply:I did this once for a car club:

Make a neopolitan round cake of white, chocolate and strawberry. Then, mix together green and yellow dye (to make blue) and pour the dye into white icing and ice the cake in blue. Then take white lettering and color in a VW logo on to the top of the cake.
Reply:Our favourite cake is one where you just make a plain sponge cake with jam/icing in the middle then melt Cadbury chocolate and pour it over the cake.

We then give the kids a couple of packets of sweets - Haribo, buttons, maltesers etc and let them decorate it themselves - always goes down much better than anything fancy!

Know your little one may be a bit young but am still sure she would enjoy licking the spoon/bowl!
Reply:Make a chocolate sponge mix as normal. Grease an oven proof pudding basin and put mixture into this. Cook as usual and when cool cut it in half (across). Then turn the 2 halves around to form more of a hedgehog shape. Cut a small piece to make the nose. Spread chocolate butter icing all over the cake and lift it on to a plate or cake board. Fix the nose shape on with some butter icing. Place chocolate buttons into the butter icing at an angle, covering all the cake except the nose end. Make the points go in the same direction to make them look like spikes. Add a cherry or red smartie for a nose.
Reply:For my daughters first birthday I did cupcakes. They are the perfect size for little ones to handle and eat on their own. I bought an inexpensive tiered plate from Kmart or Target and put them on that. Since her name is Daisy you could decorate the tops of them like a daisy...fairly simple!

Reply:when you have little ones, you want to make it super easy to eat as well as cute.

I think cupcake cakes are the best idea. you can lay them out on a platter like a big flower with a stem and just put different colored icing on each one, maybe with some simple dots on each one, and make the ones for the stem green.

this would be so easy and super cute.

congrats on the bday, how exciting. i cant wait to have kids!
Reply:come on the cakes not for the child its for you
