Tom was a jerk. He was married to Daisy for convenience. He still had Myrtle on the side, and what was worse, Wilson knew all about it. But he counted on Tom's business. Not to mention, Tom is quite the "hulking brute" to use Daisy's own words. So he could easily pummel Wilson to a meaty bloody mess.
Daisy is a fool. She could have married Gatsby for love, but she was too afraid to lose her position in society. Gatsby was the unfortunate fool who fell in love with a flake like her. And he paid for it with his life. He was shot to death for interfering between the two.
