Does Gatsby truly love Daisy or is Gatsby's idea of Daisy only an illusion?

The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald

Does Gatsby truly love Daisy or is Gatsby's idea of Daisy only an illusion?
I think he loved her as much as a shallow person can love some one, after she was gone he realized what a gem he let go of.
Reply:Gatsby loves Daisy but he never made his intentions known so she ends up marrying the other guy. And now Gatsby is wondering what could have been.
Reply:Maybe Gatsby really does love Daisy, maybe he is only hanging onto the past and wanting to repeat it. Yet it cannot be denied that Gatsby threw the parties to attract Daisy's attention. His idea of Diasy might be an illusion as well. The main thing that poses a problem to your question is Nick, cause he's the narrator, and he is an unreliable one. If you actually look at the end of chapter VI, you will realise that all Nick said about what happened between Gatsby and Daisy were all from Nick himself idealizing and romaticising the relationship between the two. No doubt that Gatsby did tell Nick about the relationship, but Gastby himself said that he didn't not know when it began. and Nick said it began on the night when Gatsby kissed Daisy. So with Nick as an unreliable narrator who narrated the whole story, one cannot be sure whether Gatsby truly love Daisy or was it just an illusion.

You might also want to take into consideration Gatsby's pursue of the Jazz age and the American Dream, whether Gatsby was in pursuit of it to attract Daisy's attention, or was it that he was in pursuit of it to match up to Daisy.

Hope this helps. :)
