The great gatsby chapter 8: why is gatsby's love for daisy described in religious terms?

I assume you are referencing the comment by Nick that Gatsby found "...he had committed himself to the following of a grail." The Holy Grail is an elusive object, but an object that has been an obsession for some people through the ages. Like the Holy Grail, Daisy is elusive - Jay can never have her - and she is Jay's obsession.
