In the great gatsby, what does gatsby offer daisy? what does tom offer daisy?
Alternatively, both offer variations on the same thing: life lived according to the American dream. Whereas Gatsby's offer is based on the romantic conception of the self, Tom's is based more upon the verities, the actualities of moneyed living. So that, if Daisy were to go with Gatsby, she would be spurning the security of her current life for what is a flimsy dream, another bubble, that will easily burst.

The choice that Daisy makes, to stay with Tom, speaks somewhat of the strain of pragmatism that helps create the American spirit, and signifies, that, in the end, the practical aspects of life overwhelm the dream. The status quo is maintained. The dream is rejected, the dreamer dies. Yet, as Nick's last vision makes clear, it is the dream that is responsible for the nature of the American character and spirit.
